February: Addiction Gene?

Description: Many parents have had numerous discussions about drugs and alcohol with their children. But what do you tell your children about addiction within your own family? Is there an addiction gene and if so, what do they need to know about alcohol, drugs and addiction? Michael Gosser, LCSW, from the Morton Center will also discuss the progression of substance use problems, especially with the backdrop of adolescent development. You will come away with valuable information on how to best educate your children on the risks of addiction.

Description: How does trust or lack of trust impact your relationships? What is the value of having a trust based relationship with you teen and how does one go about building such trust? Don Kalmey, PhD, father and Partner in The LAMP Group will lead parents in a discussion about trust and help them to build an awareness of the following:
- Understand why Trust is so fundamental for any relationship, including with your teen.
- Discover the behaviors necessary to establish, grow and extend Trust.
- Become aware of how to dialogue with your teen concerning Trust issues.

Description: Detective Spegal will be discussing current trends in drug use among teens, peer pressure, signs of drug use, what parents can do to protect their children. Detective Spegal, Jeffersontown, has been in law-enforcement for the past 15 years. Early on in his career he became very active in the lives of the children in the community and has been involved as a School Resource Officer, Vice-Chair for Oldham County Challengers Program and guest speaker for Kentucky Safe Schools Conference.

How do we help our children understand what stress is and how it affects them? Karen Raby, MSSW and Monica Hurt, MSSW will be leading a session on this topic and giving us insight into stress, ways in which stress manifests itself as well as strategies to cope with stress in healthy positive ways.
