Teens typically date within their age group. When a teen dates someone older, it may put them into an adult situation for which they aren't ready.
Teens can have a sexual relationship with someone without "dating" them.
Teens tend to run in groups or tribes. They will have sex within this tribe.
Studies show that sometimes teens have sex because it was "too easy" or they had "run out of things to do." Your goal: control when and where and instill a value system.

Insist on meeting "everyone" your child goes out with face to face when they come to pick him/her up... Everytime! Write down the following information of everyone your teen hangs out with: Name/Home Phone/Cell Phone/Car Make/Model, Parents names and street address. Set curfews based on behavior, not age or grade level. Keep the lines of communication open with your teen and maintain a healthy respectful relationship. Don't freak out when your child tells you they're "in love." Be moderate in your response, be a good listener so your kids can and will talk to you. Sometimes kids plead with their parents to date but ultimately may be relieved when told they can't. They can blame their parents and save face with their peers. Be direct and honest when talking with your teens about dating. Talk about what situation may come up and brain storm on how to handle them. Always have a plan with your teen - make them understand you are always available to pick them up - no questions asked if they call or get into trouble.
