Middletown parent group to roll out red carpet at gala

A Middletown-based nonprofit organization is rolling out the red carpet for parents next month during its first formal fundraiser that celebrates the tough job of raising teenagers.

Operation: PARENT's "First Annual Parent Premier Gala" will have a "night at the Oscar awards" feel to it with a special entrance, a four-course meal and a live band and auction, said Jean Schumm, executive director of the organization.

The gala will be held Oct. 28 at the Hyatt in downtown Louisville.

"It will help us support our programs and spread awareness of what we do," Schumm said. "But really, we'd like it to be a night where we let parents know how much they're appreciated. We want to thank them for all of the things their kids don't thank them for yet."

A Nuturing Heart: Grand marshal exudes positive attitude and passion

The influence Jean Schumm exerts over teenagers and parents is overwhelmingly supportive. With her common sense techniques, she is a guiding force within the community when it comes to communication and keeping families together.

Schumm's extraordinary efforts to keep teens and parents connected have earned her the title of Grand Marshal for this year's Oldham County Day Parade. She aptly fits the 2011 theme: "Keeping Families on Track."

Parents hear an update on school drug issues

Life Lessons | Jean Schumm, 'Operation: Parent' founder

Six years ago, Jean Schumm saw a need that wasn't being met. She wanted to create a group for parents to come together and discuss raising kids, especially through the tumultuous high school years. Schumm, a mother of five, founded Operation: PARENT, a Middletown-based nonprofit group that originated in Crestwood, where Schumm was a volunteer at South Oldham High School. Here, she shares the life lessons that she has learned from being a parent and serving as the president and executive director of the group, which offers classes for parents.

President/Founder Jean Schumm interviewed for Spring Break story about Louisville Teens on Wave3

Jean Schumm from Louisville-based "Operation: PARENT" says someone can control it: the teens' parents. "They're going down there for the most part to drink and party," she said. "It's ok to say, 'No, you're not going,' and unfortunately parents feel pressured into this, I think, and teens feel entitled to it." Schumm says spring break now is different from the trips you remember. "Maybe you were lucky and you got away with it and there weren't any long-term consequences," she said. "I wonder if those parents if they had to do it over again would you still go down and do the same thing."
