PROM NIGHT IS NOT THEIR WEDDING NIGHT.

According to MADD, "nearly half of all 15-20 year olds killed in car crashes during prom season involved alcohol."

Teens are using hotel rooms as party venues after prom. These are unsupervised locations where drinking, sexual activities and drug use can take place.

Make sure to verify the hosting parents of parties aren't under the belief that they should supply alcohol to the teens because they are in a "controlled environment."

Sometimes prom isn't for everyone. Be careful not to pressure your teen into going. Ask them if they'd be interested in an alternative event for that evening.

If they are interested in prom, follow these tips: Make sure your teen has a plan for the evening and make sure you know it. Take stock of the alcohol in your home. Know who is driving--if it is a limo, check out their alcohol policy. Encourage seat belt use, it is the best accessory! Do not rent a hotel for prom go-ers.

Work with your teen to decide on a fair and appropriate prom night curfew and schedule, including predetermined times for them to "check in" via phone calls. Finally, call the parents of teens hosting prom night parties to which your teen is invited. Make sure all parties will be chaperoned by responsible adults.
