We exist to empower parents to raise safe, strong, and healthy kids in today's ever-changing world.

Empower parents & caregivers to have casual, courageous conversations with their children

Parenting is hard. we’re here to help.

As a national nonprofit, we provide practical, prevention-focused resources that help parents navigate how to address the tough stuff, from technology and mental health to substance use and risky behaviors.

We know parenting is hard, especially when it feels like the challenges are growing faster than the kids.

That’s why we’re here: to make sure you don’t have to face those challenges alone.

OUR MISSION: Empowering Parents and Caregivers to have casual, courageous conversations with their children.

OUR VISION: A world of courageous parenting – where love leads, knowledge empowers and children thrive!

We believe prevention begins at home—and that every parent deserves the tools, confidence, and support to lead with love, courage, and clarity.

We Believe

We believe strong families begin with casual, courageous conversations. That real prevention starts at home, with honest talk, trusted information, and a willingness to show up, even when it’s tough.

We believe parents are the most influential force in a child’s life, and they deserve to be equipped, encouraged, and empowered every step of the way.

We Offer

Our goal is to provide parents and caregivers of children in grades K–12 with the most relevant, research-based, and real-life resources available, including:

  • Self-published Parent Handbooks (print & digital)
  • Monthly webinars with national experts
  • Drug prevention event kits for schools and communities
  • A free, interactive website filled with trusted tools and timely content

we serve

We proudly partner with:

  • Parents and caregivers across the U.S. Schools
  • Drug-Free Coalitions
  • Youth-serving organizations, Healthcare providers, churches, and prevention leaders

Together, we’re building a culture of prevention—one conversation, one family at a time

darrell bramer

Executive Director

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, being a parent is one of the greatest honors of my life. Growing up in a large family of nine in a house meant to fit half that number, I saw my parents struggle & sacrifice to provide & protect, all while giving us a lot of love and a lot of laughter.

While no parent is perfect, their selfless approach to parenting inspired my wife and I to strive to do the same for our family for the last 25+years.  Leading a blended family through the ups and downs of life was so rewarding and yet so hard all at the same time but we are now blessed to see the parenting journey begin with our 3 adult children.

We currently have six amazing grandkids! The journey of parenting has certainly changed from my parents’ time to mine, and now to our children’s. But what is unchanging for all parents is our privilege to guide our kids through the ups and downs of life in an educated, hopeful and positive way.

I’m here at OP today because this journey never really ends.

It’s about continuing to learn, love, educate and equip not just parents, but grandparents, guardians and caregivers alike. It truly is an honor to embrace this parenting journey and continue to strengthen the families of today and tomorrow.

The history of operation parent

2005

The Beginning of Operation Parent

After facing the challenges of raising teens herself, Jean Schumm recognized a critical gap: parents weren’t talking openly about the tough topics their kids were facing. Driven by a desire to change that, she founded Operation Parent in December of 2005—starting humbly in a local high school classroom, where she led parenting classes and honest discussions. Her goal was simple but bold: create a space where parents could learn, share, and prepare for the real issues affecting their children.

2006

First Parent Handbook Released

In response to growing demand from parents, craving reliable, accessible guidance, Operation Parent released its very first Parent Handbook. Packed with prevention-focused information on the issues families were struggling to talk about—like technology use, substance abuse, and mental health, the handbook became a trusted go-to resource. What started in a high school classroom was now reaching homes and communities across the region, offering real help for real-life parenting.

2011

Became a member of CADCA!
Expanding Access: First Spanish Translation Released

In 2011, Operation Parent translated its Parent Handbook into Spanish, opening the door to serve Spanish-speaking families nationwide. This vital step allowed us to reach even more caregivers with prevention-focused resources, support, and encouragement—furthering our mission to meet parents where they are and ensure every family has access to the tools they need to thrive.

2017

First live Webinar!

To meet parents where they were—busy, overwhelmed, and often searching online for help—Operation Parent launched its first national webinar in 2017. These live, expert-led sessions gave families across the country direct access to trusted information and real-time support on tough parenting topics. The webinars quickly became a core part of Operation Parent’s mission, creating a space for learning, connection, and courageous conversations—all from the comfort of home.

2023

A New Headquarters in La Grange, KY

A dream years in the making became reality when Operation Parent moved into its beautiful new headquarters in La Grange, Kentucky—right in the heart of its flagship community, Oldham County. The new space features a fully equipped webinar studio, welcoming meeting areas, and room to grow. More than just an office, it represents a deepening of our roots and our mission. We are so grateful to call this inspiring space home as we continue serving families across the country!

2024

Welcoming Our First Executive Director

In 2024, Operation Parent welcomed its first Executive Director, Darrell Bramer, marking a new chapter in the organization’s growth and impact. With a heart for families and a strong background in leadership, Darrell brought the vision, structure, and energy needed to guide Operation Parent into its next season. His unique gift set and deep commitment to prevention have already been a tremendous blessing to the team—and to the thousands of parents we serve.

2026

20 Years of Serving Families

Operation Parent celebrates 20 years of equipping, encouraging, and empowering families! What began in a high school classroom has grown into a nationally recognized resource for prevention-focused parenting. Over two decades, we’ve reached over 500,000 families with trusted information, courageous conversations, and a community of support. As we reflect on all that’s been accomplished, we’re filled with gratitude—and even more excited for what’s ahead. Here’s to 20 years of impact—and many more to come!
